You may ask me if nursery rhymes are important for children. 30 years after I learned nursery rhymes, I sometimes look at some best nursery rhymes video and feel nostalgic about it. One of my favourite nursery rhymes was Yankee Doodle and sometimes look at the beautiful Yankee doodle nursery rhyme with lyrics and wonder why I cannot remember them.
Another one of my favourites was the old wheels on the bus nursery rhyme which thankfully I can remember by heart. But let us not concentrate on what I remember and what I do not and let us move into the importance of nursery rhymes. Well, you will be amazed to know that experts in literature and child development believe that if a kid knows about 8 rhymes by the age of four then they are likely to be the best readers and spellers in the class. But why is this so?
Benefits of nursery rhymes
Well, nursery rhymes go a long way in teaching phonic skills to the child. The child develops the ability to hear, manipulate and identify words with the help of rhymes. Most schools believe that rhymes are the best way of teaching early phonics to kids.
Nursery rhymes help children to practice pitch, develop a rhythm and control volume while speaking. The child gets to understand at what volume he should speak in a particular setting. This is primarily because elders keep on asking the kids to recite rhymes as they find it cute but in a way this helps the overall development of the child. Learning language variations become essential for children and rhymes help a lot in this.
Nursery rhymes help in expanding the imagination and creativity of a child. When a child learns a rhyme then he is more or less visualising the sequence of events going on in the rhyme and this helps him have a broader sense of imagination. Sometimes kids go further from this and start drawing what they imagine while learning a rhyme.
Most rhymes follow a sequence of events and most of them are in the form of stories or they tell a story. These are some of the first stories every child learns and thus develop a liking towards different kinds of stories. Most children feel attached to these stories and the engagement that is developed is required later when the child will read long proses and articles.
Nursery rhymes Videos are great in developing the initial vocabulary of a child. The first English words that your child is likely to learn are going to be from nursery rhymes. There are many phrases used in rhymes which a child is not likely to come across during day to day life and thus rhymes help in a way to develop the vocabulary of the kid.
Nursery rhymes are initial versions of poetry. Most rhymes are in the form of poems and again this helps in introducing poetry to a child’s life. Children are required to learn various forms of poetry throughout their schooling career and nursery rhymes are going to take them a long way in beginning to love poetry
Children get introduced to sophisticated literary devices while learning rhymes. This may not seem obvious to the kids while they learn the rhymes but somehow these help in the future. The best part about rhymes is the fact that children start appreciating rhythm and the importance of it in many cases.
At last, nursery rhymes are of course fun. Who does not like to hear a child recite a rhyme? We all do and therefore I hope that each and every generation get to learn nursery rhymes in their initial phases of schooling.
